I’ve published a number of articles around customer loyalty, empowerment as well as short versus long time goals and optimisation.

If you have not read them yet, you might want to do this before continuing because this article will build on them plus bring them all together. Yes, there indeed is a common theme here as different as they might be.

After posting them – and though I’ve been quite busy since which is why it took so long to publish this – I received some quite interesting thoughts but also quite a few notes saying they all would seem so negative and critical.

Guess, it turned out to be a good thing I was too busy posting this article to tie them together earlier because this way I could truly reflect on and incorporate that feedback.

Have to say I never saw these articles as any kind of criticism or indeed negative – funny thing is that I thought it was quite the opposite. There were huge opportunities to be had that wouldn’t necessarily even require lot’s of investment.

This brings me to today’s topic: Opportunity or as it now turned out to be “the nature of opportunity”.

What is an opportunity? In my mind it’s the possibility to improve, to optimise and in the commercial arena in the end to make more money. Everybody wants opportunities – they are a truly beautiful thing.

So why do we view areas that might be improved, things that might be optimised and learnings to be made as negative? Why do we view having opportunities in the first place as being negative?

Imagine that there was nothing left to realise, learn and improve upon. As a business everybody would be stuck – no ways to have more customers, a more loyal customer base and in the end more money. The same actually also applies to all of us as persons – what a terrible place if you couldn’t grow and improve.

I view having opportunities as something truly beautiful. Sure it sometimes isn’t easy to realise every opportunity because growth is challenging and painful. The realisation that somethings we did and were all so proud of in the past are still to be improved can be difficult. Because the rewards of making these realisations, hearing different thoughts and growing are so plentiful I believe there’s nothing negative or critical in pointing out areas of opportunity.

To wrap this up: I would love to hear your thoughts again. They help me improve and grow – as a person and a business. I will continue to provide my honest and sometimes possibly unpopular thoughts when I post here and in my engagements.

If you are interested in discussing personally on how this could help improve your business just let me know.
